So you've got the vision, you've found the musicians, you've even had a few gigs, but what on earth do they call you? I mean, what's in a name right?
WRONG! (Just try giving your girlfriend a wreath instead of a bouquet - well they're still flowers aren't they....)
Sure if we're talking about a name you just got landed with then no-one can hold it against you, but this is different. This is a name you've chosen. This is a name that people will presume you think says something about you. This is the first (and often only) thing that you'll be judged on when you're languishing at the bottom of the billing and no-one wants to come to the 'nobody's-heard-of-this-lot-but-they-were-very-cheap-tent' at your first festival. You'd better get it right!
After months of batting ideas around, and coming up with nothing at all (thanks for the enthusiasm Chris, but 'The Harvest Noodlers' will have to wait for now bro), we came across an inspired track on the new album of some friends of ours
(Shaico: Perry-Herbert-Shaw)
(check out Dylan's guest fiddle on 'Back to the Garden') with the chorus, 'There's four walking in the fire'. In a world of quartets, here we were singing as a trio, and with a focus that was born out of a desire to communicate something of the love and grace of Jesus Christ to those who heard us.
All of a sudden we realised that the one thing that we longed for was that folk should see that when we perform there's a Fourth Man present - and He's the entire reason for everything we do.
Whatever style we settle on as we grow together. Whatever venues we eventually get to play. Whatever success we may or may not have. Ultimately, if we can introduce you to the Fourth Man - to the One Who has brought us this far, and will surely bring us through - then whatever else may or may not come to pass, we will be satisfied. He is everything to us. In every situation He is our Hope, our Confidence, our Treasure, and our only Message. He found us when we were broken, forgave us when we were guilty, healed us when we were shattered, and at His Cross He bought us life in all it's astonishing fulness.
We didn't have anything to sing about until we met Jesus. Nothing to celebrate, and no message worth sharing. Before we had the idea to set out on this journey, He was preparing a path for us. If the songs have any power, it's because He gave them, and by His grace we have the privilege to express them to you. If our performances touch lives, it will be His hands that bring healing, hope and forgiveness. And when it gets tough, and we have to face the challenges which will surely come, no matter if the whole thing goes up in flames, we won't be standing alone...
...there's a Fourth Man in the Fire!
